It is with profound sadness that Seaspace International Forwarders Ltd shares the news that our Chairman and founding partner, Michael (Mike) Smith has passed away. Mike died peacefully at home on Thursday 5th August 2021.
Mike was part of a freight dynasty, being born into a family-owned forwarding firm with roots going back over 200 years. After many years learning and experiencing business within the family firm, Mike decided to strike out independently, establishing and running several successful freight industry ventures. The last of these was the creation of Seaspace International Forwarders Ltd in August 1988.
From relatively humble beginnings, as a purely ocean freight forwarder, under Mike’s guidance the company steadily grew to encompass air freight, warehousing, and fulfilment.
In 2008 Mike retired from the day-to-day business, although remained as Chairman. Sadly, within six months of his retirement Mike suffered a debilitating stroke which meant he couldn’t enjoy his later years as much as he deserved.
Mike’s character and business acumen will be missed by all within Seaspace who had the pleasure to know him and work alongside him. Our principal thoughts and prayers are, however, with the family he leaves behind.
